Other Work

All trees are special, the younger ones as well as those that have been around for many hundreds of years.

The collection is developing all the time, so please visit regularly.

This new section will include work I have done recently in and about the many magnificent woodlands and forests in the UK and abroad.

This first entry is a view I saw in July 2025, when we walked in this magnificent forest where every tree was in magnificent, sunny green-ness.

Close Encounters in Ancient Woodlands

Individual Encounters in the woodlands, stately homes and gardens of the UK

Chatsworth House is one of Britain’s foremost stately homes. It sits on a raised terrace overlooking the River Derwent and is backed by a steeply rising, well-wooded ridge. This tree is beside the footpath that winds up the hill through the woods above the house and its gardens.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park, in the grounds of Bretton Hall, West Yorkshire, is home to a world class collection of works by many leading sculptors. The one shown here is a giant egg, titled Oeuvre, and is by Gavin Turk. It’s sited on the bank of the lake, and I’ve added the lake and an eyot in the behind.

This beech tree is on one of the wooded hillsides above Todmorden in West Yorkshire. It lies beside the track leading up to a farmhouse where I lived for 11 years, and I used to pass it almost every day. It is an old friend, and last time I was there it was still going strong.

On this day, the Spring sunlight was dappling the trunk through the new green beech leaves.

The Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is in folklore a symbol of purity. It’s a a striking, deciduous tree with elegant, drooping branches. When mature it can reach 30m in height. It grows as far south as Spain and as far north as Lapland, and seems to love the Yorkshire Pennines. This lone silver birch was standing in the boggy ground of the Longshaw Estate near Sheffield on a freezing winter's day.

Endcliffe Park contains one of several areas of ancient woodland in the City of Sheffield. The Porter Brook, which runs through it, is one of Sheffield’s five rivers, and a walk beside it leads from Hunter’s Bar, not far from the City centre, up the valley to the edge of the moors.

This view, taken on an late Winter day features a group of beech trees near the fast flowing river.

Eryri (Snowden) National Park contains several areas of Celtic Rain Forest. These threatened habitats provide perfect conditions for rare plants, lichens and forest fungi to grow, as well as trees.

In this drawing, I’ve tried to capture the unique nature of each tree, this one an old lime tree surrounded by the dense profusion of Spring growth - ferns, mosses and the first green leaves on bushes and trees. As we sat near this tree, two birds of prey called to each other above our heads and the winter rains soaked through our clothes from the saturated ground.

Welcome
to My Site

Welcome to my website, which contains examples of my lifetime of fascination with very young children, and the countryside I have enjoyed since I was young myself.
